I used the laser cutter to cut out my illustrations. I have experimented with the laser cutter previously but only in 2D, this time the intention was to bring the pictures into the third dimension.

The key themes of the piece is imagination, nostalgia and interaction. The installation is set up behind a fake wooden wall, which I have painted with an instructive illustration to lead the viewer to each latched door, starting from the periscope at the bottom, up to the two city scenes in the middle, and the space scene which can only be viewed by stepping on to a platform.

These are the paper planets and stars that I used to construct the space section of the installation.

This is the view from inside the fake wall. Here i have suspended hand drawn street scenes of Leeds and London, seperating them with a partition to be viewed through the doors, the Leeds viewing hole is pictured below.

The scene below goes in front of a cardboard periscope (above), and is lit from beneath by a lightbox. the periscope is mounted onto a hole in a wall and remains invisible to the viewer, creating quite a disorientating experience.

I was asked by Jack Scales and Joe Torr, part of the Paper Boys Club illustration collective to take part in their night LIMN. It features consecutive live illustrations projected in the bar Nation of Shopkeepers in Leeds.

At the moment I am working on my final major project in Leeds College of Art. So far I know I want to create an environment for the everyday to become very unusual, through illustration and sculpture I plan to create a work complete with sights, sounds and cityscapes. I have been drawing buildings in streets that are familiar to me, and combining them with imagined ones, creating streets out of my subconscious filtering process.

This is a collaborative project for Uni in which I created a 'Dream Library' collected from volunteered dreams posted on a facebook page. I essentially illustrated each dream and categorised them into nightmare, anxiety, wish fulfillment, and many more.

A Typical British City

I made another version that included the original script, made by filming and editing rigidly on the camera then adding a seperately recorded soundtrack over it. The narrator also had no preperation. The method is called Super8 in reference to the old cameras.

Last year I made an installation inspired by the brief 'Interrogating the City'.

Stage One: The city itself was of course Leeds, and my method of interrogation was using the Census to get a sense of the character and behaviors of the city, without creating a narrative that is too personal and focused.Using facts about the different Universities, Religion, travel systems and residential trends I began to focus my efforts into an three dimensional mind map. Stage two: After visiting Rachel Whitereads installation in the 'PsychoBuildings' exhibition in the Hayward Gallery, London I was inspired to create an complete environment the spectator could immerse themselves in. I also began looking at ways for the installation to be instructive and joyfully educational, and I immediately thought of 'Look Around You', the spoof science program. So I decided to also make a science/spoof program about Leeds, using the minature model set, hoping for a retro almost kitsch end result.When you went into the installation room the song playing was "Ticky Tacky" by Malvina Reynolds, which my mother used to sing and say it reminded her of Bradford, where she spent a large portion of her adolescence. The song has a fatalistic quality with a sharp sense of humour which I thought fitted in with my idea and interpertation of the census.

Last year there was a Graffiti exhibition at my art college featuring Sweet Toof, Cyclops, and Tek33. After meeting the artists I began to wonder if graffiti could be something I could get into, although I was wasn't sure that the conventional midnight vandalism was really my thing. A great deal of the street art I enjoy is on posters and stickers, allowing for more artistic detail and freedom. This kind of street art is closely linked to poster, flyer, and character design which is something i could see myself doing in the future. Another realm of public art peoples spontaneous creativity, I love this car for example, the woman who owns this is a fair trade clothes designer and had customized her car really uniquely. Its this sort of accidental urban decoration that really excites me and creates a sense of visual community in cities.

Alternative Press Fair

Last month in Euston North London I visited an Alternative Press Fair to snoop around for ideas. I discovered a brilliantly retro dungeonlike mahogony community centre packed with brogues, and quiffs, and expensive pieces of paper. Also known as hoxton heaven, I was most pleased. I want more things like that to happen, althoughyou do get the distinct impression that most of these talented Illustrators have day jobs, and are making a financial loss in their profession, might not be the case though, I speculate.

Emma Robertson's silhouette cut out paper really ticked by box. I like that flat white feeling of paper, which makes any shape or image in it look 'minimal' and pastel. I like. ees good.
